Working with the community participation in disability
We established our first CBR programme in Mombasa branch in 1992 to serve the coastal region. In 1999 we conducted a feasibility study and based on the experiences and outcome of the feasibility study APDK Nairobi initiated Community Based Rehabilitation program in the year 2000 in the slums of Mukuru in the following Villages Mitumba,Marigu-ini,Fuata Nyayo, Kayaba, Lungalunga, Rueben and Kwa njenga. The programme was started with a joint funding from Kindernothilfe and Christoffel Blindenmission.
Our CBR program aims at contributing to Quality inclusive Health, social and economic wellbeing of children with disabilities and their families. Our main target groups are persons with disabilities with a bias no children with (physical, Visual, hearing, mental, epilepsy) disabilities. We promote community participation in rehabilitation of persons with disabilities resulting in mainstream disability in the community through training and using Community Health Workers (CHWs),Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), groups of Persons with Disabilities, existing health facilities, school communities, parents of children with disabilities, churches, administration office and children with disabilities.
APDK services are structured using the Community Based Rehabilitation organizational model produced by World Health Organization.

- Orthopaedic assessments and issuance of mobility and assistive devices.
- Sensitization on prevention of disabilities
- Health promotion
- Transfer of therapeutic skills
- Medical care
- Rehabilitation of identified services
